About Us

Welcome to The Open Church, a place where Real People live in a Real World, following a Real Jesus. Our church is all about offering a safe space for those who need it most—whether you're facing challenges with addiction, struggling in your relationships, or simply feeling worn out by life. We're here to help you find the rest and healing that you seek.

Life can be tough, and everyone goes through seasons of hurt and hardship. At The Open Church, we understand that. We believe that Jesus came to bring light into the darkness, freedom to those who feel trapped, and comfort for the brokenhearted. We're committed to being a community that offers exactly that—a place to find peace and healing, no matter where you’ve been or what you’ve done.

It doesn’t matter where you come from; you’re welcome here. We want you to feel accepted, loved, and supported on your journey. Whether you need counseling, spiritual guidance, or just a community to be a part of, we’re here for you.

At The Open Church, we’re not perfect, but we’re doing our best to live like Jesus and be a place where you can grow, heal, and find new hope. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest... and you will find rest for your souls.” If you’re looking for rest, healing, or a fresh start, we invite you to join us.

Our Purpose

“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.”

— Isaiah 61:1–3 (NIV 1984)

Rex Boyles

Rex

Rex was raised on a farm near Sudan, Texas. His mother and father raised four boys on that farm. They took them to church every time the doors were open, sent them to school, taught them to work in the fields, let them play football, basketball, and baseball, and loved them with a tough and tender kind of love.

Rex became a Christian in the church of Christ in Sudan. It was there that his Bible class teachers reinforced what his mother and father were teaching him at home. It was there that he made the decision to obey Jesus.

When Rex went to college at Abilene Christian and Lubbock Christian, he received teaching and saw examples that inspired him to become a teacher. He wanted to teach young people about Jesus and help them understand that Jesus can really be their best friend.

Rex received further Bible training at the Sunset School of Preaching in Lubbock, Texas. When he graduated, he served the Lord in Olton, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. When he returned to Sunset, he was given the opportunity to train young men and women to serve the Lord in mission fields all over the world, through the Adventures in Missions (AIM) program. In 10 years, some 600 young adults made it their aim to teach the gospel in over 30 nations and over 20 states.

In the 30 years that Rex has been teaching people about Jesus, God has allowed him to preach in 12 foreign countries and some 30 states. Whether it is across the street or around the world, Rex teaches about a “real” Jesus, who offers “good news for the poor,” “grace for the sinner,” and “comfort for the broken and bruised.”

Rex has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work through Lubbock Christian University and is a Licensed Social Worker. He recently completed his Master's work in Professional Counseling through Regions University in Montgomery, Alabama.

Rex is blessed with a loving family, faithful friends, and now an incredible ministry.
